'Ramacanta Kamat' whose stage name was ‘Kamat de Assolna’ was one of the
finest yesteryear artists of the Konkani stage. He passed away in Miranda
Hospital in December 1987. He is survived by his wife, Muriel, and four
daughters - Indira, Maya, Bina and Milan, the youngest, who is stationed in
the United Kingdom. Ramacanta was one of the few Hindus who embraced the
Konkani stage which is mainly dominated by Christians. Many people were
under the impression that he was a convert but he was a Hindu and died a
Hindu. He was well-liked by the tiatro fraternity and was very popular with
the public. He gave us many memorable songs but he will be remembered by
generations for his masterpiece song “KONKANI ULOI KONKANI” in which he is
immortalized. Over the years, the song has not only become popular among
Goans in Goa and abroad but it has also become an inspiration to one and all
for learning the Konkani language.

In the olden days and until recently if a tiatro did not include a
“Konknneanchem kantar” it was as if something was missing; it had become
part and parcel of a tiatro. The following duet is a classic one which is
sung by Kamat de Assolna and the nightingale of the Konkani stage, Ms
Sharon, who dominated the stage in the 1980’s and 1990’s and stole the
hearts of Konkani audience! She is one of the first Konkani actresses who
began to sing on the stage with a mike in her hand.
